What Moves You? is a cinematic documentary exploring the inspiration and motivation that modern cultures associate with running & fitness. Told from the point-of-view of runners from all walks of life “What Moves You?” is a feature-length documentary that captures the heartbreak and euphoria of “every runners” as they push through the pain barrier, and life, in search of the joy of running.
The film introduces two remarkable men; the first, a salty 51 year old ultra runner who only came to running in his 30’s. His austere existence just outside Johannesburg is a direct result of growing up in South Africa in the 80’s and 90’s during the oppressive social engineering experiment known as Apartheid. The second, a middle class urban hipster who makes a conscious decision to eschew all material trappings and lead a similarly austere life in rural Washington State. These men lead almost parallel lives, yet for very different reasons and the film explores how running was the catalyst for positive change in both their lives.
The film also reveals the story of an inspiring young woman who leads two different lives after being thrust into the limelight as Saudi Arabia’s first ever female competitor at the Olympic games in London. Growing up in sunny California she benefited from all the freedoms and equal opportunities that women in the United States enjoy. And as a member of the Saudi Olympic she learned first-hand just how fortunate her upbringing was for a Saudi woman. This is the story of how running changed her life and gave her the opportunity to changes the lives of others.
Like millions of people around the world who have discovered the joy of running, these ordinary runners have proved that the sport is not only a means of overcoming personal challenges, but can also be an agent for change that transcends social, racial and economic barriers.
Featuring spectacular aerial footage of some of the most scenic running events in the world, as well as interviews with running favorites like ‘The mayor of running”, Bart Yasso; 9-times Comrades King, Bruce Fordyce; Ultramarathon Man, Dean Karnazes and many more. Through running stories and interviews with runners, and academics from all over the world, the film will uncover the deeper connection that runners share with one another.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
What Moves You? is essentially a labor of love for the filmmakers, and so the success of the project relies on passion, perseverance and the kindness of strangers. We have been humbled by the kindness, encouragement and support we have received since officially setting out on this journey a little over a month ago. Our quest seems to be resonating with runners all around the globe, and people have been eager to participate and to offer to help in any way they can. So how can you help?
They say you should never let a lie get in the way of a good story. Well, we’re really only interested in the truth and have found that sometimes reality is way more compelling than fantasy. Either way, we need to know who the characters are and what moves them.
So if you feel like you have a great running story to tell, let us know about it here. If you know of someone who has a great story but needs a little coaxing to tell it, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org so that we can try to convince them to be a part of out film
